Living in Haiti Haiti is a small island in the Caribbean which borders the Dominican Republic. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world with the average income being only $280.00 per year. Many of the people are starving to death because there are not enough jobs available. Haiti has a high rate of illiteracy. Roughly 80% of the population can't read or write. Part of the underlining problem is that in Haiti, education is not free. You have to pay to go to school, even for the Government schools. Only one out of every three children is able to attend a school at all. The Damou Christian Mission educates more than 550 students. With your support, we are able to buy the children books and uniforms. Most of the children would not have proper clothes to wear if we did not do this. In Haiti, most of the children do not have books even if they were able to attend school. On average, children only eat one good meal every three days. We feed the children at school. This is often the only food many of the children receive. (Learn how to Sponsor a Child…)
