The Damou Christian School

Damou Christian School was established in October of 1988. It is located in Cyvadier, a small village outside of Jacmel in the southern part of Haiti. (Learn more about life in Haiti…)

At the beginning of 2000, we had an enrollment of 520 children at the school. This number is for preschool age up through eighth grade. We are adding a class a year now that the high school is up and running. This way we can add additional staff and find sponsors for the children as they enroll each year. (Learn how to sponsor a child…)

We now have more than 650 students. From preschool through high school, we teach the fundamentals of math and science as well as offer several language classes.

  • Preschool

Our preschool program starts at age three (3) and takes them through kindergarten. The children learn how to [Tina, please add a description of your kindergarten program here…] and play […].

  • Grade School

The elementary school consists of grades one through six. Here the students take courses in math, science, as well as several different language classes including English, Creole, French, and Spanish. Most of the children speak four or five languages. In our language programs, we help them develop their grammar, spelling and reading skills. [Tina, please feel free to re-write this paragraph to better describe the elementary school program and curriculum].

  • High School

We began adding high school classes in 2000. This year will be our first year with freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Students learn [Tina, please add a description of the high school program and rework the previous sentence as necessary…].

In addition to their regular studies, we teach the children about the stories of the Bible and the Christian faith. This is an important part of each student's life and an important part of what we are here to do. We believe it is important to let the children know that God loves them and that we love them too. We do that in our actions of love, supplying them with an opportunity to learn and change the society they live in. (Learn how to sponsor a child…)

In addition to their regular studies, the children also participate in embroidery, sewing, cooking, crochet, wood working, basket weaving, and agriculture projects which include gardening and raising livestock.

We are able to buy the children books and uniforms. Most of the children would not have proper clothes to wear if we did not do this. In Haiti, most of the children do not have books even if they were able to attend school. They have to copy what the professor has written on the board. Our children have their own set of books.

On average, children only eat one good meal every three days. We feed the children at school. This is often the only food many of the children receive. (Learn more about life in Haiti…)
